Building on the successful Being Black in Canada flagship program, the Fabienne Colas Foundation (FCF) launched the Being Black and LGBTQ+ in Quebec program with financial support from the Minist\u00e8re de la Justice du Qu\u00e9bec. This program provides training, professional support, and a visibility platform to five emerging or mid-career Black and LGBTQ+ filmmakers and showcases Black audiovisual talents that have not benefited from in-depth professional training in the film industry. The Fabienne Colas Foundation\u2019s Being Black in Canada program has welcomed a remarkable number of participants from the LGBTQ+ community since its inception in 2012. The incubator that supports emerging Black filmmakers through all the short documentary creation stages is now the largest of its kind in Canada because of the Foundation\u2019s many partners. This incubator is offered in Montreal, Toronto, Halifax, Calgary, Ottawa, and Vancouver.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

While Black people are rarely seen on our screens, Black people from the LGBTQ+ community are almost completely erased. The Being Black and LGBTQ+ in Quebec project addresses the intersection of systemic racism and LGBTQphobias through cinema.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In keeping with the \u201cBeing Black and LGBTQ+ in Quebec\u201d theme, five Black filmmakers from the LGBTQ+ community will be supported in the production of their short documentary. Filmmakers will benefit from mentoring in all stages of research, creation, production, postproduction, and distribution. Their short documentaries will be screened during this year\u2019s Black History Month, at the Toronto Black Film Festival, the Halifax Black Film Festival, and the Fade to Black Festival in Montreal. Following these events, the documentaries will be submitted to other festivals, including Massimadi (Montreal\u2019s LGBTQ+ Afro Film and Arts Festival) and image+nation Festival Film LGBTQueer Montr\u00e9al, as well as in the education and community sectors.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

  1. Come from the Black AND the LGBTQ+ communities<\/span><\/li>
  2. Show a proven interest in the audiovisual and documentary filmmaking<\/li>
  3. Have an actual professional career plan in the audiovisual industry<\/li>
  4. Demonstrate motivation for the program<\/li>
  5. Be available for program-related activities, especially
    – between January and July 2022 for training, mentoring, creating, editing, follow-ups, and discussions, and
    – between September and December 2022 for screenings, festivals, broadcasts, and promotion<\/li>
  6. Be available to participate in the Black Film festivals tour in various Canadian cities as requested<\/li>
  7. Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident<\/li>
  8. Live in Quebec<\/li>
  9. Be able to shoot your film in the Greater Montreal area<\/li>
  10. Submit one or two non-professional, semi-professional, or professional videos you made (for example, short film, clip, video, home video)<\/li>
  11. Submit an idea for a documentary subject that respects the program theme (300 words)<\/li>
